Does anyone have one of these?  Do they like it?

I am still in a holding pattern for workman's comp and I'd like to find a way to exercise that will improve my balance gently but which is doable on my current schedule, aka I work nights so classes are Right Out and many of the exercise videos I used to use are just plain too high impact.

I don't own a wii, so I'd need to spring for the console as well as the balance board.

I used a balancy board doohickey in PT and it helped me a lot, so I was thinking that perhaps the wii fit would be similar and as you know bob-flist, I am very fond of yoga.

What I'm hoping for: Tell it I want to work on balance for the next twenty minutes.  Tell I want to do 25 minutes of gentle yoga.

Will it do that?

ETA: I am reliably informed that Wii Fit Plus is better, so I'd be getting that.

Everything I've heard says that Wii Fit Plus is better. You don't need to get Wii Fit first, just the plus. However, I have no experience (I was looking it up in case I buy such a thing for my sister...)

That is my vague impression; if I do get my sister a wii, i will also be getting a wii fit plus, since that would be a big part of the point. I'm planning to read everything mme_hardy says on the topic to decide. :)

I will ask my writing partner when they return from dinner. I believe they have used the Wii (some variation) for the last year with good results. We have the XBox Kinect, which has a lot of game-type exercises as well as more traditional stuff. My partner and teenager use it and say it's a lot of fun. I'm not sure how customizable it is.

I have a standard balance board which I use at a standing desk at times, to good effect. I can't stand still for long without pain and the balance board helps me to keep shifting, though I can 'park' it in a tilted position to concentrate.

Ok, WP has the plain old Wii and found it a lot of fun and nicely motivational. There were a lot of exercise options and it was easy to switch between activities to get a good workout.

Hey -- but I am actually looking to sell my Wii + Wii Fit Plus w/balance board. They're about a year old, opened, set up, and never used*, so I figured I might as well cash them in and make myself go to the gym instead.

If you're not interested, no worries.

* Literally, because I suck. I stood on the balance board to make sure it worked.

Hey! I used my roommates' Wii Fit to do balance-y things until they moved house and I couldn't. My finding was that the yoga was pretty strange because you've got one leg raised up on a step the whole time (might not be a problem for other people, I am super careful about my knee angles due to an injury), but that there are lots of balance-based games that are really fun and work directly on using all the little muscles in your feet and ankles to shift your weight effectively, which is something I certainly needed.

My main complaint with the Wii Fit not-plus was that you couldn't combine exercises into a playlist and had to stand there while the menu reloaded, and it looks like Wii Fit Plus addresses that issue directly.

If you want to actually get your heart rate up a bit and you can't handle lots of impact on your legs but are still doing mostly fine in the arms, I actually recommend Wii Sports Resort, which doesn't use the balance board and so requires all arm stuff. I liked canoeing and cycling for this. Pretty much the only really aerobic thing on Wii Fit is running in place, which is right out for me, but I can break a sweat Wii Canoeing.

The balance-y games are really hard for me, which is why I recommend them; I'm realizing that I don't have a lot of fine balance control, I pretty much compensate wildly.

You have seen what I had to say about body-policing. Lie. Tell it you're 6' 7".
